One of Dee’s favorite pastimes is riding horses. She can’t imagine what it would be like not being able to enjoy one of her favorite hobbies.

“I would be miserable if I didn’t have a good-fitting prosthetic. It allows me to live my life and do the things I want to do, which is what everybody wants."  says Dee. “I think initially my goal was just to get back riding ‘cause that’s my happy place.”

Dee understands the value in finding a good prosthetist, and a prosthetic facility that listens, works with you to determine together what you need based on how you live your life.  A prosthetic facility that has the technology and the staff to get you back to living your life.

“You see so many amputees that have a very negative outlook and it’s hard not to. I mean I’ve run into people that are in their wheelchair and I’m like “Why don’t you have a prosthetic?” recalls Dee.  “Because I can’t get one that fits” or “I can’t” you know, it’s hard. I mean it’s like grounding. You ground someone and it’s hard to live your life.  I think they give up; they cannot find a company to do what they need so they give up.

“And when I went to Fourroux, it was totally different." explains Dee.  “I have met people that care, people that take the time to sit down and listen to what you want to do, what your goals are, how active you are or that you want to go chase your grandkids or chase your kids and then try to come up with solutions to get you where you need to be, to do the things that you want to do.”

So, Dee’s message to those who are struggling with their prosthetics…

“There are prosthetics out there available that can do what you need to do.  I don’t think there’s anybody that’s too hard to fit.  I do everything that I did before.  It’s terrifyin’ to think you’re givin’ up everything.  I understand that mentality, but, don’t give up.  Go to Fourroux!”

The woman highlighted in this testimonial holds an extra special place in our hearts.  Meet Mia Roberts, the office administrator of our Fourroux - Atlanta office, who also has utilized a prosthesis for many years now.  Mia experienced an Above Knee (Transfemoral) amputation due to car accident in 1996, when she was on the way to high school during her senior year. Her determination and strength motivated her to push forward and despite the hardships she faced, she strived to regain her mobility.

Mia obtained a Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling because she wanted to assist others with disabilities to get back to work.  She has worked in the O&P industry since 2009 - providing her administrative skills, as well as peer to peer counseling to patients just like her.

Mia’s passion for what she does is evident - “I’m always a phone call, text, or an email away.  I enjoy what I do and I’m ecstatic when I can assist other individuals with their prosthetic needs!"

There aren’t enough words to express how much of a difference Mia has made in the lives of those she’s encountered.  She is a powerful woman, who has supported and inspired countless individuals and she continues to do so on a daily basis.

The world of prosthetics is relatively unfamiliar to the general public, but the advancements in prosthetics over the past couple decades amaze those who come in contact with one. Prosthetics today are technologically advanced and are designed specific for each individual, allowing amputees to be as functional as they were prior to amputation, and in some cases more.

Prosthetics are made up of various components with varying degrees of complexity, and it seems like the technology is constantly evolving. However, there are some generalities of a prosthetic leg that need to be initially understood. That understanding is crucial for a person who is living with limb loss, as well as those who have a friend or loved one who is dealing with amputation.

As with any new obstacle in life, Jim Stevens had no idea what the future would hold when he lost his limb below the knee. He knew very little about prosthetics, or life as an amputee. He didn't know what all it would entail. Would he be confined to a wheelchair? Would he be able to resume the things in life he enjoyed?

This year the Sochi 2014 Paralympics are predicted to break viewing records. Each nation sends their best atheletes and this year that includes one of our Fourrouxers!

Megan Harmon, a Huntsville, Alabama native, will be competing the 2014 Paralympics in Snowboard Cross. She is one of only two females selected for the U.S. Para Snowboarding Team!
